Do you have a budget for the laptop, or any other requirements, e.g. for battery life?

What is more important for you about the display: good colors (good for e.g. night maps) or a higher refresh rate/less latency (good for e.g. close infantry combat). Gaming laptops usually have a type of display that has less latency, but the color quality is usually not very good.

naaaa, battery life is not important for me, 5/7 hours are enough. My budget... mmhhh, considering the real usage of it, between 500 € ( 570 $ )/ 700€ ( 800 $ ). I should use it during my long work-shifts, for FHSW and as a pastime. I usually let it in my office, and there are a lot of thieves here whistling . Then, if there are no choices under that budget I can add some money... but I'm a real miserly  guy.  rolleyes

oh, I prefer less latency... you know I'm a real pro  ah

That budget is a little restrictive, but it turns out that it is possible to get a very decent laptop within that budget if you save some money in some of these ways:

    * I don't know about Value Added Tax where you are, but I get around it by buying hardware invoiced in the name of a friend's firm and they return the tax amount to me (they can do that because they can account for it as expenses for the firm...);

    * You can buy a laptop without any Windows licence included (there are laptop offers with either no Operating System installed, or a free OS installed) and then use whatever you have - some Windows licence you have from somewhere else, a pirated Windows, or a free operating system (I think RADIOSMERSH was running FHSW under Linux - he should know about what's the situation with FHSW and Linux);

    * Often there are discounted deals for laptops that have been unpacked, refurbished, etc;

    * In some cases you can save a little by not buying a hard disk with the laptop and using your old one;

    * You can find some nice high-end laptops for very little money from reputable second hand dealers.

So far I had a look at a couple of manufacturers who I have some good impressions about, Dell and Clevo, and I found that there are a few models with this very good combination of hardware:

    * CPU: Intel Core i7-7700HQ. It will go up to 3.8GHz in single-threaded load such as FHSW (which puts it relatively high on the chart I posted, especially compared to the other mobile CPUs), which is very good - perhaps about 1-1.5 minute loading time in FHSW, and it is also a quad core, so it will be good even for new games, etc.);

    * GPU: GeForce GTX 1050 (plenty fast for FHSW, even good enough for many of the latest games);

    * 15" display;

More specifically, I think that this is an excellent configuration: Sager NP5855 a.k.a. Clevo N855HJ

Some random shops where you can see the specifications and customize it and see the cost:

https://www.sagernotebook.com/Notebook-NP5855.html
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-n....ation=1

Clevo is the manufacturer, and the same laptops go by other brands, such as Sager.

The price for the default configuration with a Windows® 10 Home licence and a HDD, and no tax or shipping included is about where your limit is - 800$/700€. So, perhaps you can find this model somewhere with cheap/free shipping to you, and if you can also save yourself the tax, it may be possible to get it for 700€. Also, you can save $45 for the HDD and/or 70$ for the Windows licence...

You want the default, TN display (lower latency, not excellent colors, but lower price) and not the IPS one (better colors, but probably higher latency and at a higher price). Both are Full HD (1920x1080) which is more than good enough for a 15" display. 8GB RAM is good enough. It is nice that it has the option to upgrade to a very fast SSD on a M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4 slot now or in the future. A SSD would only save a few more seconds from loading time in FHSW, but it would help speed up some other tasks. If you exclude both the HDD, Windows licence, tax, and have cheap shipping, you may be able to include a 120GB or 250GB M.2 SSD now, within the budget (you can still add your old HDD for more storage).

This is just one nice model I have found so far. We can continue looking. You can open some online shop and search for laptops with a 1050 GPU and a 7700HQ CPU and you can find a lot more models within the budget, although some of them I wouldn't recommend so much. For example, Dell has some models with the same GPU and CPU, but with a display with a very low 1366x768 resolution; there are also some Acer models, but they don't have a very good reputation for being reliable. But there probably are some other good models. You can also look for laptops with slower CPUs, such as 7300HQ (up to 3.5 GHz in single threaded applications, such as FHSW; also only 4 and not 8 hardware threads) 7500U and 7300U (again, up to 3.5 GHz in single threaded applications; even slower in multi-threaded applications because they have 2 cores and 4 hardware threads, both half of what 7700HQ has). There are also models with previous generation hardware - the CPUs are only very slightly slower for the same frequency, but their frequencies are lower, e.g. 6700HQ is a 4 core/8 thread CPU like the 7700HQ, but it only goes up to 3.5GHz, instead of 3.8. They also go with previous generation GPUs, which are somewhat slower and a lot less efficient, both in power and in price. The last gen laptops are not significantly cheaper, from what I found.

I hope I was helpful so far. I can help you some more by answering questions and helping you select the best offer.

P.S.: In some places and for some models there is a choice between 2GB and 4GB video memory versions of GeForce GTX 1050. I'd recommend the 2GB one for FHSW, since it doesn't use that much video memory.

For when you leave the laptop unattended you can use a simple cheap (~5€) lock for the Kensington lock slot that every laptop has.

P.S.2: I hope you are not still dependent on optical discs in the year 2017, because this Clevo model has no DVD, or even a place for an internal optical drive!

thanks Airi, very helpful, it's true my budget is not very high but I'm planning to buy the ps4 VR too, for my long winter night and, as I said, my laptop it's only for fhsw during my long job shifts... Anyways, thanks again, here we have a lot of pc stores and I will use your infos to buy the best configuration that my small budget allows. I can save the 22% Vat if I buy it with some fiscal facilitation.
Thanks again

Since you can save the VAT I really recommend to try to find the exact model, Sager NP5855 a.k.a. Clevo N855HJ. I'd search online first, then contact specific shops that may have it. If you try going to brick and mortar retail shops directly it's not very likely that you'd find this or another appropriate model at a good price. If you are unable to find this exact model, I'd recommend looking/asking first for a model with a GeForce GTX 1050 (or 1050 Ti / 1060) and then the CPU being the second criteria (but not too slow, if it can't even do more than 3GHz for an Intel CPU, I'd look for a better one). Older GPUs like 960M and 970M may be OK too, but they are a lot less efficient and therefore harder to cool, and 960M is slower too.

Set Windows 7 Maximal + NVIDEA for laptop(if have that). I think Hard need to 550GB. 6 RAM it's good for game laptop.

I googled for clevo laptop italy and found this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads.....652403

There I searched for Italy and found four Italian stores which all supposedly sell Clevo laptops (although under different names):

http://www.santech.eu/
https://syspack.com/configuratoreNotebook.php
http://www.raiontech.com/categoria-prodotto/gaming/
https://aps-informatica.it/categor....emblati

So there are Italian stores for Clevo laptops. There are also stores in other EU countries, such as this, which includes free shipping to Italy:

https://www.pcspecialist.it/notebook/optimusVIII-15/

I didn't find N855HJ with TN display on those 5 websites, but there is the similar N850HJ / N850-HJ1 or whatever with an IPS display which adds to the price. Still, the prices look a bit high. Maybe you could call them and ask for N855HJ, with the cheaper TN display, and they may be able to get you one.

Or you could search some more for other stores, perhaps in other EU countries, with cheap/free shipping. You can search in the same thread - http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads.....652403
